Samuel Taliaferro Rayburn was born on January 6, 1882, in a rural area of Roane County, Tennessee. At age five, Rayburn, along with his parents and nine siblings, moved to a forty-acre cotton farm in Flag Springs, Texas. One more child was born after the move to Texas, and every member of the family had to do their share to make the farm profitable. Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr. (b. Oct. 11, 1877, Buda, Tex.-d. Oct. 23, 1937) was a Democratic member of the Texas House of Representatives representing the 89th District. He served in the 29th, 30th, 35th, 37th, and 38th Texas Legislatures. He was the father of the thirty-sixth President Lyndon Baines Johnson and the son of Samuel Ealy Johnson, Sr. He was a struggling farmer and cattle speculator who lived in the Texas Hill Country.
